BEYOND THE STREETS is a multimedia showcase of graffiti and street art featuring over 100 artists throughout 40,000 square feet of industrial indoor and outdoor space in downtown Los Angeles. This is a must-see exhibition, and here are a few of the artists you must know.
Lady Pink was born in Ecuador, raised in NYC and currently resides in the countryside north of the city. In 1979, she started writing graffiti and soon was well known as the only female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. As a leading participant in the rise of graffiti-based art, Lady Pink’s canvases have entered important art collections such as those of the Whitney Museum, the MET in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum and the Groningen Museum of Holland.
AIKO was born and raised in Tokyo before moving to New York City in the mid-90′s. Her art career in NYC began when she started working for Takashi Murakami. After finishing her MFA in Media Studies, she later met up with two American artists and the three of them would establish the group now known as FAILE. Creating work within the collective locally and abroad for a number of years, she moved on and established herself as Lady AIKO in 2006.
Claudia “Claw Money” Gold is one of the most prolific public artists with an unsanctioned art career that dates back to 1989. Gold’s CLAW icon became a ubiquitous fixture of NYC’s urban sprawl and has since grow to garner international acclaim. Claudia now stands as a recognized artist, influencer, fashion editor, author, and designer.
Caledonia Curry, who exhibits her artwork under the name SWOON, is a classically trained visual artist and printmaker who has spent the last 14 years exploring the relationship between people and their built environments. Her early interventions in the urban landscape took the form of wheat-pasting portraits to the walls of cities around the world, and her public practice has expanded to using art to rebuild communities and humanize today’s most pressing social and environmental issues.
BEYOND THE STREETS runs May 6 – July 6, 2018, and tickets can be purchased from their website.
